After helping hundreds of Kansas City families work through the same recurring issues, we have noticed something that surprises most owners. Most dog training problems we see at KC Dawgz are not really about the dog. They come down to how the human is communicating, rewarding, and following through. Once you understand the real cause behind the behavior, the fix is usually closer than you think.
Why Most Dog Training Problems Start With Us, Not the Dog
Every behavior your dog repeats has been reinforced by something, and most of the time, that something is us. We hand out attention for jumping. We let pulling get the dog to the next smell faster. We repeat “sit” five times until our dog learns to ignore the first four cues.
Before assuming your dog is stubborn, run a quick self-check:
- Has the cue been practiced in 5 or more different rooms and environments?
- Is the reward valuable enough to compete with what your dog wants in this moment?
- Is your dog calm enough to learn, or already over threshold?
Key Takeaway: Dogs are rarely defying us. They are usually confused, distracted, or under-motivated. Address one of those, and most behaviors improve within days.
The Most Common Issues We Tackle Every Week
Here are the five recurring patterns we see across our Overland Park, Olathe, and Gladstone locations, along with what we actually do to fix them.
1. Inconsistent Rules Across the Household
If one family member allows the dog on the couch and another scolds him for it, the dog is not stubborn. He is guessing.
The fix: sit down with everyone in the home and agree on the same cues, the same reward markers, and the same boundaries. Consistency from every human is the single fastest training upgrade we recommend.
2. Leash Pulling
Dogs have a natural oppositional reflex, meaning they pull against pressure. Pulling has also worked for them in the past, since it gets them where they want to go faster.
The fix: use a front-clip harness, stop walking the moment the leash goes tight, and reward heavily for any slack in the line.
3. Poor Recall (“Come” Is Ignored)
Most dogs stop responding to “come” because the cue predicts the end of fun. Going inside, getting a bath, and leaving the park.
The fix: never call your dog for something he dislikes. Pay heavily with high-value food every single time he comes, and practice on a long line before going off-leash.
4. Jumping on Guests
Jumping continues because attention, even a knee bump or a scolding, reinforces it.
The fix: teach a default sit at the door, reward only when four paws stay on the ground, and manage the entry until the behavior is solid.
5. Separation Anxiety vs. Boredom Destruction
These two get confused often. True separation anxiety is a panic response. Boredom destruction is under-stimulation.
The fix: for boredom, add enrichment, exercise, and crate training. For real separation anxiety, work with a certified trainer who can build a desensitization plan. Severe cases often respond best to a structured Board and Train program.
Pro Tip: Five to ten minutes of focused training each day beats one long weekend session every time. Short reps, every day, in different rooms.
