What Actually Makes Goldendoodles Different to Train
A doodle is a Golden Retriever crossed with a Poodle, and you get pieces of both. That combination creates a short list of predictable problems.
- They greet with their whole body. Aggression is rare in this breed. Over-the-top friendliness is the norm, and it shows up as jumping, mouthing, and frantic greetings that knock over kids and scare visitors. That is an impulse control problem, and impulse control is trainable.
- They velcro to you. Goldens bond hard, and Poodles are intensely social, so doodles follow you to the bathroom and fall apart when you leave. Independence has to be built on purpose, the same way sit is.
- Their coat makes handling a training issue. Doodle coats mat close to the skin, and surface brushing does not stop it. A dog who fights the brush, the ears, and the paws gets brushed less, mats worse, and ends up shaved down at the groomer. Our Puppy 101 class covers grooming manners for exactly this reason.
- They change size on you. Depending on the Poodle parent, a doodle can finish anywhere from mini to standard. A 25-pound puller and a 70-pound puller need different leash plans.
- Adolescence hits hard. Between roughly 6 and 18 months, doodles get bigger, faster, and interested in everything except you. Recall that worked in the backyard stops working at the park. That is normal development, not a training failure, and it is the window where most owners call us.

Penn Valley Off-Leash Dog Park
KC’s original dog park at 29th and Wyandotte, split into a 2.7-acre run for big dogs and a 1.8-acre run for small and senior dogs, open 5 a.m. to midnight. A doodle who cannot be recalled off another dog is a doodle you cannot get out of that gate.
Swope Park Off-Leash Area
Five acres at 5051 E. Gregory Blvd, plus miles of surrounding trail. Big open space rewards a real recall and punishes a decorative one.
Berkley Riverfront and the Riverfront Heritage Trail

Which Program Fits Your Goldendoodle?
- Your doodle is 8 weeks to 7 months. Puppy Training is the best value per dollar for doodle owners. Puppy 101 covers socialization, basic obedience, potty training, grooming manners, and the mouthing and jumping that start it all, plus AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy certification. Puppy 201 adds distance, duration, and distractions.
- You are out of time and out of patience. Board & Train is two weeks of daily training while your dog boards with us, plus a handler session for you. Pick Obedience for manners and control, or Behavior Modification for anxiety, leash reactivity, or guarding.
- You do not want to send your dog away. Day Training runs 2, 4, or 6 weeks, plus single days and discounted bundles. Drop off 7:30 to 10 a.m., pick up 4 to 5:30 p.m.; dog sleeps at home. The four-week program adds remote collar work for off-leash heel and recall.
- You want to do the work yourself. Private Training is one-on-one at our facility, in your home, or virtual, built around your dog.
- Your doodle is bored. Group Classes include Companionship Agility and Scent Work. Both burn mental energy, which is the kind of tired a doodle actually needs. Agility starts at a year or older so joints are developed.

1. Free Evaluation
We meet your dog, watch how they move and greet, and get specific about your goals. Recall at Swope is a different plan than surviving the groomer. Book yours here.
2. Program Match
We recommend the format that fits your schedule and your dog’s age, not the most expensive option on the menu.
3. Foundation Work
Marker training, engagement, and the core skills: sit with an implied stay, place with an implied stay, loose leash walking, and recall. This is where jumping, mouthing, door manners, and polite greetings get addressed.
4. Distraction Proofing
New people, new dogs, new floors, new noise. In our four-week Day Train, dogs start out-of-facility field trips in week three.
5. Go-Home Session
A dedicated 60- to 90-minute session where you learn the KC Dawgz system, practice hands-on with your own dog, and get transition keys for the first weeks at home.
6. Follow-Ups
Included follow-up private sessions, plus single-day Day Train sessions and 10- or 20-day bundles when adolescence resurfaces at 14 months.

Yes. Dogs over four months old inside KCMO city limits must be licensed and current on rabies, with the tag displayed. A one-year license is $10 plus a $2 administrative fee. A three-year license is $27, but only if your dog had a three-year rabies vaccination within the last six months. You can license at any KC Pet Project location, at a participating vet, or online through PetData, which adds a $1.95 convenience fee.
Yes. Kansas City ordinance requires dogs to be leashed in public, and on your own property they need a leash, fence, or containment. Designated off-leash areas like Penn Valley and Swope are the exception, which is why a real recall matters before you unclip.
As early as possible. Foundational in-home work can start at 2 to 3 months, and Puppy 101 takes pups up to 7 months at the first class. The main socialization window closes around 16 weeks, so waiting until the jumping gets bad means retraining instead of training.
No, but they are easy to under-train. They pick up commands quickly, which fools owners into stopping early, and then adolescence arrives around 6 to 18 months, and the skills fall apart under distraction. Consistency and distraction proofing matter more with this breed than raw repetition.
