We are often asked when you should start training your dog, and the answer is that you can never start too early. At KC Dawgz puppies can do our board and train program, private training sessions or one of our group classes! Whatever direction you choose, you can’t go wrong! Getting an early start greatly helps in your long term success training your dog!
Getting your puppy started on the right paw will shape their behavior for a lifetime! Our group puppy class focuses on teaching: proper socialization, basic obedience, grooming manners, and potty training rituals – all of which are imperative for your puppy to experience at a young age. This class also seeks to prevent predictable puppy problems and break puppy habits like: mouthing, jumping, resource guarding, and chewing. During our group puppy class, we conduct puppy recesses and structured pack socialization breaks to promote proper socialization and instill positive behavior with other furry friends. Puppies who attend may be up to 7 months in age when the first class begins and must have age-appropriate vaccinations.
This program includes a AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program Certification.
Socialization: Learn how to socialize your puppy properly in a positive environment.
Engagement: Fun, motivating and stimulating games to play with your puppy.
Basic Obedience: Easy-to-follow program that utilizes optimal reinforcement to teach basic commands (come when called, place command, sit and down stay).
Prevention: Provides simple exercises that prevent your puppy from developing common behavioral problems (the ‘leave it’ command and other redirection techniques) etc.
Domicile Orientation: Clear and simple instructions to help you teach your puppy good bathroom habits in within the home.

Why Choose the Group Puppy Package?
Invest in your puppy’s future with our Group Puppy Package—an engaging and effective way to nurture good behavior, sociability, and a strong bond between you and your furry friend.
You can never start too early. At KC Dawgz, puppies can begin with in-home foundational lessons as young as 2–3 months, and our Puppy 101 group class welcomes puppies up to 7 months old at the first session. The critical socialization window closes around 16 weeks of age, so getting an early start greatly improves your long-term training success.
To train with KC Dawgz, your puppy needs to be up to date on Rabies, Distemper/Parvo, and Bordetella (Bordetella is required every 6 months). Puppies in our group classes must have age-appropriate vaccinations to keep every pup in the pack safe and healthy. Bring your vaccination records when you enroll.
Yes, and you should. The most important socialization window overlaps with the vaccination series, so waiting until 16 weeks can cause you to miss it. Our group puppy classes are held in a controlled environment with other vaccinated puppies, which is one of the safest ways to socialize during this critical period while still protecting against disease.
Yes. All dogs and cats in Overland Park must be licensed by the time they reach six months old, or within 30 days of being brought into the city, whether or not they go outside. A license will not be issued without proof of current rabies vaccination. Pet licenses are valid from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, and residents have until June 30 to license each pet without incurring a penalty. You can apply through the City Clerk’s Office at opkansas.org.
Pricing depends on the format you choose: group classes, private lessons, day training, or board and train. Kansas City-area private training generally ranges from roughly $60 to $155 per hour, so packages are often the better value. Call us at (913) 217-7288 for current package pricing and any available specials.
Puppy 101 covers the fundamentals: socialization, basic obedience (sit, down, place, recall), potty training, and preventing common problems like mouthing and jumping—and includes AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program certification. Puppy 201 is for Puppy 101 (or Puppy Private) graduates and works through a ten-step program that builds distance, duration, distraction work, and advanced leash skills, earning the KCD Puppy 201 Obedience Certificate. We recommend a 1–3-month practice period between the two.
We have three locations serving the greater Kansas City metro: puppy training in Overland Park (10750 El Monte St #200, Overland Park, KS 66211), Olathe (16129 S Lone Elm Rd, Olathe, KS 66062), and Gladstone, MO (4902 NW Old Pike Rd STE 200, Gladstone, MO 64118).
It depends on your schedule and goals. Board and train suits busy owners who want intensive, hands-off progress; private lessons offer fully customized one-on-one work; and group classes add the socialization benefit of learning around other puppies. A good starting point is our free evaluation, where we’ll help you pick the best fit for your puppy and lifestyle.
