We all know the importance of dog exercise, but did you know that dogs need mental exercise just as much? Many problem behaviors like digging and chewing arise from a combination of boredom and energy. Just like us, when our dogs get bored they will try to find a way to relieve that boredom. Usually, the outlet they decide on is not one that we want them to use. The good news is that there is a multitude of ways to keep our dogs occupied physically AND mentally. One good option that you can find today are puzzle toys. Generally they hold treats and your dog has to figure out how to get to them, whether that is moving the toy around, opening a flap, or pressing a button. One of the biggest benefits of using these is that while your pup is having fun, they actually promote problem-solving skills that can transfer over to our training sessions.

Another option is to start participation in a sport or activity with your dog. There are lots of options for any breed at any age. Agility, Nosework, Trick, Disc, and Competitive Obediece are just a few that are fun and easy to start. If you are an outdoorsy person and like to hike or run, start taking your dog along. You can even find scent kits at outdoor stores to teach your dog to find antler sheds while you hike!
