Behavior Modification

Do You Need a Dog Behaviorist or a Dog Trainer?

Start with your vet if the aggression is new or sudden, or if your dog may be in pain. A veterinary behaviorist is the right call when medication may be part of the plan. For most reactive, fearful or guarding dogs, a professional trainer who specializes in behavior is where to start, and we’re glad to work alongside your vet.

Who Leads Behavior Cases

Behavior cases at KC Dawgz are led by our most experienced trainers. Victor, Allison, Regan, EmilyAnne and Traven are AKC evaluators.

  • Victor, lead trainer: more than six years as a professional trainer, a graduate of Kennelwood Academy for Dog Trainers and a Protection Sports Association member who has trained under Larry Krohn and Nino Drowaert of STSK9. Reactivity and aggression cases are the work he enjoys most.
  • Allison, lead trainer: trained through the KC Dawgz apprenticeship program and specializes in obedience and behavior modification.
  • Regan: 16 years with dogs, including behavior cases with local rescues and a veteran service dog program, plus a six-month mentorship on the neuroscience of fearful and reactive dogs.
  • EmilyAnne: six years with dogs, specializing in fearful reactivity, with a six-month mentorship on the neuroscience of behavior modification.
  • Richard: working with dogs since 2008 and a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP), focused on aggression, reactivity and separation anxiety in family dogs.

How Behavior Modification Works at KC Dawgz

  1. Free evaluation. Your trainer meets your dog, learns the triggers and history, and recommends 3, 4 or 6 weeks.
  2. A clear way to communicate. Your dog learns a few core commands first, so the trainer can guide it through hard moments.
  3. Structured, gradual exposure. Your dog practices staying calm around its triggers at a level it can handle, then a little more.
  4. Working visits. You come in for about an hour, usually on a Friday, to handle your dog around triggers with your trainer beside you. This is where most of the real progress for owners happens.
  5. Go-Home session. A 90-minute session on graduation day covers how to keep the gains going at home.
  6. Follow-up lessons. Private sessions after graduation help you handle new situations.

How Long Does It Take?

Mild cases often need 3 weeks, moderate cases 4, and long-standing or severe cases 6. Your trainer recommends a length at the evaluation and tells you what to expect for your dog.

Breeds We See Most

Instinct shapes where the work starts. A dog bred to guard a doorway and a dog bred to scan on a leash can look the same when they react, but the work starts in different places. We see this most with German Shepherds and Dobermans. We also see separation anxiety in breeds that bond hard, like Goldendoodles.

Reactive and Aggressive Dog Training FAQ

Can aggression in dogs be cured?

Most dogs improve a lot, but no honest trainer guarantees a cure. Our goal is a dog that is safer, calmer and easier to live with, and an owner who knows how to manage it.

How much does reactive dog training cost in Kansas City?

Our behavior programs are $2,600 for 3 weeks, $3,000 for 4 weeks and $4,000 for 6 weeks, plus $33 a night for boarding.

Is board and train good for reactive dogs?

Often, yes. Daily practice in a controlled setting lets your dog make progress without rehearsing bad reactions at home. Working visits then teach you to handle your dog yourself.

Do you work with dogs that have bitten?

Yes. Dogs with a bite history are paired with one of our senior trainers.

Will I learn how to handle my dog?

Yes. Working visits, the Go-Home session and follow-up lessons all focus on you handling your dog around its triggers.

Do you work with my vet?

Yes. If your vet or a veterinary behaviorist is involved, we’re glad to coordinate with them.
