Dog Training in Kansas City, MO

Kansas City asks a lot of a dog. Dinner crowds on the Plaza, bikes on the Trolley Track Trail, elevator rides in a River Market apartment, and the off-leash area at Penn Valley Park all test whether training holds up in public, not just in your living room. That’s the kind of dog training in Kansas City, MO that KC Dawgz is built for.

We train Kansas City dogs from two nearby academies: Gladstone, about 6 miles north of downtown, and Overland Park, just across State Line from Brookside and Waldo. Puppy or grown dog, new adoption or years of bad habits, our certified trainers match your dog to the right program and coach you through it start to finish.

Our Clients Say It Best

“My reactive dog went through the three week day train program. I am so thrilled with the results. I am able to walk him calmly through my neighborhood now at any time and he is a perfect gentleman. Before, I would have to try to time my walks where I might not run into other people or dogs. We are both so much happier!”

“I have a 3 year old lab/collie mix named Gracie. She is the sweetest thing and so smart but I just could not get her leash trained. We did the 4 week day training program and the results are amazing. Her trainer was Bella and I can’t say enough great things. Gracie got to go on various field trips and Bella had her so well controlled. I was so happy I was in tears. I don’t have a yard so this is truly life changing for us.”

Board & Train in Kansas City

Board and train is what most Kansas City families search for, and it’s the most immersive way to train. Your dog lives and trains with our team for 2 to 6 weeks at our Gladstone or Overland Park academy, then comes home with the habits already built.

  • Training all day, every day. Short sessions spread through the day, with daily repetition a weekly class can’t match.
  • A comfortable place to sleep. Board & Train dogs stay overnight with our boarding partner in the same building: Woofs at our Overland Park academy and Digs at our Gladstone academy.
  • Two tracks. Obedience for everyday manners and reliability, or Behavior Modification for aggression, severe anxiety, fear and leash reactivity.
  • You learn it too. Every program ends with a Go-Home lesson and follow-up sessions, so the results carry over to your home and your block.

Would you rather your dog sleep at home? Day Train gives your dog the same daily training at the academy, and you pick them up every afternoon with no boarding charge. Your free evaluation will tell you honestly which one fits. Compare Board & Train and Day Train.

What We See Most in Kansas City Dogs

Kansas City dogs live everywhere from Crossroads lofts to Northland cul-de-sacs, and each setting brings its own problems. Here’s where we see local dogs struggle most, and how we fix it:

  • Apartment life downtown and in Midtown. Barking at hallway noise, lunging in the elevator, and pulling toward every dog on the sidewalk in the Crossroads, River Market, and Westport. We teach a reliable settle and calm, close leash work for tight spaces.
  • Pulling on the Trolley Track Trail and around Loose Park. Joggers, bikes, strollers, and squirrels everywhere. We build a loose leash that holds up on a busy Saturday, not just an empty sidewalk.
  • Patio manners on the Plaza. A dog that settles under the table while people and dogs walk past is a skill, not luck. We proof place and down around real crowds.
  • Recall at the off-leash parks. Penn Valley Park’s off-leash area and the Swope Park dog park are only fun if your dog comes when called. We build voice control first so off-leash time is safe and useful.
  • Newly adopted rescue dogs. Many Kansas City families adopt from KC Pet Project or Wayside Waifs, and a new dog can bring fear, leash reactivity, or no house manners at all. We start where your dog is and build confidence step by step.

Our Dog Training Services in Kansas City

Board & Train

Full immersion. Your dog lives and trains with our team at our Overland Park or Gladstone academy for 2 to 6 weeks and stays overnight with our boarding partner in the same building (Woofs in Overland Park, Digs in Gladstone), with working visits so you learn the handling too. Choose the Obedience track for everyday manners and reliability, or Behavior Modification for aggression, severe anxiety, and fear. Training is $2,000 to $4,000 depending on track and length, plus $33 a night for boarding. A 3-week program comes to about $3,260 for training and boarding. See Board & Train programs.

Day Train

Training without the overnight stay. Drop your dog off at our Gladstone or Overland Park academy in the morning and pick up a tired, better-behaved dog in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Obedience programs run 2, 3, or 4 weeks ($2,000, $2,600, or $3,000), each ending with a Go-Home lesson and follow-up sessions. For dogs that are aggressive toward people or other dogs, a 6-week Day Train behavior modification program starts at $5,000. Your dog sleeps at home every night, so there’s no boarding charge. See Day Train programs.

Puppy Training

Puppy training that starts your Kansas City pup off right, before bad habits set in. We cover housebreaking, crate manners, early leash work, and bite inhibition, along with the early socialization that matters most in the first few months. Puppy training starts as early as 8 weeks, and puppies can join Day Train from 4 months old. See puppy training.

Private Training

One-on-one sessions built around your specific goals, held at our Gladstone or Overland Park academy or, for parts of Kansas City within a practical drive, in your own home. In-home training is available case by case, and we’ll tell you honestly during your free evaluation whether in-home or the academy is the better option for your address. See private training.

Group Classes

Structured group classes at our Overland Park academy, including Puppy 101, agility, and scent work. A budget-friendly way to sharpen skills and proof them around other dogs before you take your dog somewhere like First Fridays in the Crossroads. A great next step after Day Train or Board & Train. See group classes.

How It Works

1. Free evaluation.

We meet your dog, hear your goals, and assess the behavior. No cost, no pressure.

2. The right program.

We match your dog to the right program, whether that’s Board & Train, Day Train or private lessons, and give you clear pricing before anything starts.

3. Hands-on training.

Your dog trains with our team at the Gladstone or Overland Park academy, with an overnight stay at our boarding partner in the same building or home every evening on Day Train, or in-home if your part of Kansas City qualifies.

4. Go-home coaching.

We coach you so the skills hold up on the Plaza, at Loose Park, and on your own block, not just inside the training room.

Kansas City Dog Training FAQs

Is there dog training near me in Kansas City?

Yes. We have two academies close to Kansas City, MO: Gladstone, about 6 miles north of downtown, for the Northland and the urban core, and Overland Park, just across State Line, for south Kansas City. In-home private lessons are available in parts of the city close enough for our trainers to reach.

Is board and train or Day Train better for my dog?

It depends on your dog and your schedule. Board and train is the most immersive option: your dog lives and trains with us for 2 to 6 weeks and stays overnight with our boarding partner in the same building. It’s the better fit when a dog’s progress resets at home, when anxiety is worse at home, or when you’re traveling. Day Train gives your dog the same daily training while sleeping at home, with no boarding charge. We’ll recommend one at your free evaluation.

Where does my dog stay during board and train?

At our Overland Park or Gladstone academy. Board and train dogs train with our team during the day and stay overnight with our boarding partner in the same building: Woofs in Overland Park and Digs in Gladstone.

How much does dog training cost in Kansas City?

Day Train obedience programs are $2,000 for 2 weeks, $2,600 for 3 weeks, and $3,000 for 4 weeks, and 6-week Day Train behavior modification starts at $5,000. Board & Train training runs $2,000 to $4,000, plus $33 a night for boarding. Every dog starts with a free evaluation, so you get clear pricing before anything starts.

Do I need to license my dog in Kansas City, MO?

Yes. Kansas City, Missouri requires dogs over four months old to be vaccinated for rabies and licensed with the city, with the tag worn at all times. To train with us, your dog needs current rabies and distemper/parvo vaccines, plus bordetella within the last 6 months.

Where can my dog go off-leash in Kansas City?

Penn Valley Park has the city’s best-known off-leash area, and Swope Park has a fenced dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs. North of the river, the Waggin’ Trail Dog Park in North Kansas City is a short drive from our Gladstone academy. Build solid recall first so off-leash time is safe and actually useful.

What age should my puppy start training?

Puppy training can start as early as 8 weeks, and puppies can join Day Train or Board & Train from 4 months old. Early socialization pays off for years, and the sooner you start, the easier the teenage stage gets.

Do you offer in-home dog training in Kansas City?

Selectively, yes. In-home sessions depend on drive time from our academies, so they work best in parts of the city near Gladstone or Overland Park. We’ll confirm during your free evaluation whether in-home or academy training makes more sense for your address.

Do you work with aggressive or reactive dogs?

Yes. The Behavior Modification track of our board and train program is built for aggression, severe anxiety, fear and leash reactivity. For dogs that do better sleeping at home, we also offer a 6-week Day Train behavior modification program. See our reactive and aggressive dog training page.
